THE CHAKRA SYSTEM

| I started reading about energy-building techniques— everything from yoga to the latest research in exercise physiology. I quickly realized that all of these techniques aim to increase oxygen levels in the body.
At the age of 47, I developed—and began practicing—a high-oxygen program. Within a matter of months, my oxygen usage rose from 42.7 milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute to 55 milliliters—a 30% increase. At the same time, my energy levels rose dramatically. |
| Stress-reduction techniques, such as yoga, can also help.
Migraine headaches are more severe, but they usually can be controlled or prevented by using ibuprofen or prescription drugs, such as sumatriptan (Imitrex).
Warning: Headaches that increase in frequency. . .are unusually severe.. .or are accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, slurred speech or vision changes, should be brought to a doctor's attention immediately. Meditation, T'ai chi, and yoga are beneficial.
Medication: The medication loperamide is used to treat diarrhea. For very severe unresponsive episodes of diarrhea, a medication called alosetron (Lotronex™) can be used. It can cause severe constipation and should be used carefully. Tegaserod (Zelnorm®)is used to treat chronic constipation that does not respond to dietary modification. The antispasmotic dicyclomine (Bentyl®) can be used to treat spasms and bloating pain, although lifestyle and diet modification are usually successful. |

Meditation, deep-breathing exercises, and yoga are all worth trying. Even if they don't end up preventing hot flashes, you will get other benefits from these activities, such as improved sleep and general calmness. Slow, controlled, deep rhythmic breathing or "paced respiration" practiced twice a day has been shown to decrease hot flashes. Take a slow, deep breath, hold it for a few seconds, and exhale just as slowly. They say that the paced-respiration technique can help relieve a hot flash if begun at the onset.
